Today is World Refugee Day, recognized by the United Nations as a time to reflect and take action to help people who have been displaced from their home countries.
It can be difficult to comprehend the scale of what’s happening in places like Syria or Iraq. So we’d like to share the story of one family.
Through our customer, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), we met Abdullah Hussein. Abdullah served as a translator for the US Army in his home country of Iraq. He was then targeted by extremists, and reached out to IRAP for help.

Abdullah’s journey is one that’s close to our hearts. The parents of our co-founder, Arash Ferdowsi, came to the US during the Iranian Revolution.
He’s just one of many Dropbox employees whose families immigrated to America, so we wanted to learn more about IRAP’s work around the world.
We hosted Becca Heller, co-founder of IRAP, and Farah Alkhafaji, another former IRAP client who has since resettled to the US, at Dropbox HQ yesterday. We chatted about their backgrounds and next steps to alleviate this crisis.
