By some estimates, half of the workers in the US have jobs that are at least partially suited to working outside the office. Think of it as being unchained from your desk—and not a work-til-you-drop lifestyle. Want to be able to check in quickly while you’re at a coffee shop, or on a train, or maybe just going outside for a breath of fresh air? That’s the kind of flexibility we want everyone to have. It’s part of our mission to unleash the world’s creative energy by designing a more enlightened way of working. So we’ve introduced new features to help you keep work moving from anywhere. With the latest additions to the Dropbox mobile app, you’ll be able to:
Stay up to date
All too often, the clutter that surrounds our work gets in the way of figuring out what to do next. That’s the idea behind our file activity feature, which helps you stay up to date on your work. Starting today, we’re bringing file activity together with file previews in our mobile app. Now, when you preview a file in your Dropbox, one tap will pull up a list of events, including edits, shares, and—for Dropbox Professional and Business Advanced users—viewer history. File activity is great for getting a quick pulse on how your work’s moving along, without disrupting your team’s flow.
Work as a team
We’ve also brought that idea—helping you keep work moving without needing to drop everything—to the teamwork features in our mobile app. Starting today, you’ll see a streamlined file preview design that lets you easily comment right alongside your content. At the bottom of any file preview, you can access teammates’ feedback, add your own, and get file activity updates. We’ve also made sharing buttons more prominent throughout the app, so you can quickly and easily send your work over to the people who need it.
We gave fashion retailer Les Lunes a sneak peek at the new mobile app, and they’re excited about the possibilities. “It’s so much easier responding to comments from my phone,” says their CEO, Anna Lecat. “When I’m running around, I can’t think of any place where it’s convenient to stop somewhere, open my laptop, and get online.”
Find what you need
When you’re on the go, the last thing you want to do is waste time tracking down your work. So we’ve recently added a centralized Home screen that brings you straight to your most important items, with starred files, and recent work in one place. And once you start browsing files, you can switch over to gallery view to see large thumbnails instead of a file list. This new feature is ideal for browsing visual content like photos and videos—and getting to the work you’re looking for.
We’re also making it easier to organize your files and work with other apps, with support for drag and drop in iOS 11. Within the Dropbox iOS app, you can now use drag and drop to organize your files and folders. And if you’re using an iPad, you can drag files between Dropbox and other apps.
You can try these new features by downloading the updated Dropbox app from the App Store or the Play Store. File activity is available today on iOS; we’ll be rolling it out soon on Android. And we’ll have more mobile app updates soon, so be sure to check back here for the latest.
